Hôtel des Roys Versailles - L'Opera de Versailles

The king’s vegetable garden

Open to the public, the Potager du Roi is a remarkable garden classified as a historical monument and included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It extends over more than 9 hectares and now houses the National School of Landscape. Shaped in 1683 by Jean-Baptiste de La Quintinie, the Potager du Roi was intended to provide the table for Louis XIV.

Nearly 450 fruit and vegetable varieties over several hectares drawn with the rule

The gardeners of the Potager du Roi respect with precision and meticulousness the art of old-fashioned pruning and cultivate many varieties of fruit and vegetables, some of which are very rare and have fallen into oblivion. In total, nearly 450 fruit varieties and 400 vegetable varieties are grown there. In addition to guided tours organized throughout the year, the garden hosts many cultural events (Plastic Dance Flore festival, Saveurs du Potager, etc.). About sixty tons of fruit and vegetables are produced each year and part of the harvest is sold in the reception shop.
